Acupressure - self care for hand and facial areas.

Introduction

In today’s world we often find it difficult to take time out and focus on what we need to balance our mind body and soul wellbeing……so….WELL DONE and CONGRATULATIONS in taking some time for you…..time you deserve….you are worth this personal investment.

My focus as a Holistic Practitioner is based on empowerment and supporting the body to balance itself. We often forget just like a car, if we do not look after and provide fuel for the car then it can breakdown. Similarly, our body (car) will also start to function poorly. We are all guilty of focusing our attention on everyday life pressures, which means we can sometimes take out attention away from the essential maintenance ‘we’ need from time to time.

This booklet has been put together to provide information you can use to support your personal wellbeing. It will identify some key acupressure pressure points on the hand and face that can help you manage everyday wellbeing issues. It is intended for your personal use only.

Tips provided are offered in good faith and based on clinical training and current research. Any complementary therapy should not be used instead of any medical treatments or advice but can be used to support this and enhance your overall wellbeing.

You are advised to always seek medical assessment if you have any health-related issues.

What is Acupressure ?

Acupressure a complementary and holistic, healing therapy that can be traced back to ancient Egyptian History and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It works on the belief that energy flow through channels (Meridians) and when these become blocked a result can be physical and emotional illbeing or imbalance.

Applying pressure to specific points can help to relieve these blockages, hence support wellbeing.

Although many people are familiar with acupuncture, acupressure precedes it. Research suggests that acupressure was used in ancient China as far back as 2500 BCE.. Acupressure works on the same points as Acupuncture – just without the needles.

The original Chinese name for acupressure massage is "An Mo," which means pressing and rubbing. Interestingly, when people hurt themselves, they may instinctively apply pressure to the sore spot. This natural reaction aligns with the principles of acupressure. Despite its ancient origins, the principles and practices of acupressure have remained largely unchanged over the centuries

Acupressure can help with our overall wellbeing and can be used to support many areas in our lives (stress, anxiety, sleep, muscular skeletal problems, fertility issues, etc).

Key areas of focus in acupressure are the hands and face, both are thought to provide a map of the body. By stimulating specific points, it is believed that we can help our body to heal and rebalance itself. Take 5 minutes a day using a few points and see how your wellbeing improves

How to do apply Self-Help Acupressure for the Hand?

·      The surface area of the hand is relatively small. This means that the body map on the hand is very condensed. Therefore, only LIGHT GENTLE pressure should be used.

·      Where possible hold both the PALM and FRONT of the hand TOGETHER in the location indicated below.

·      The THUMB and MIDDLE FINGER are used to apply gentle pressure when completing acupressure holds to the hand. For the main pain point normally only the thumb is used.

Why Use the Thumb and / or Middle Finger for the hands.

THE THUMB

THE MIDDLE FINGER

·       Is part of the Lung Meridian.

·       This governs respiration and the exterior protection of the body.

·       Is part of the Pericardium Meridian, which focuses on energising yin energies (passive, calming, balancing).

How to do apply Self-Help Acupressure for the Face?

Acupressure  points  for the face are the same as those used in EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique), and Facial Reflexology. These are all holistic / complementary therapies that support energy flow and balance leading to wellbeing for our MIND BODY and SOUL (SPIRIT).

·       For THE FACE use your middle finger or index finger and gently tap / rotate / massage the pint. It is also possible to gently finger walk from the acupressure point towards the outer edge of the face once the points are stimulated. Very gentle pressure is uses and the facial nerve pathway is very sensitive and responsive. Note applying too much pressure can lead to bruising for sensitive skin types.

Can Acupressure be used with other therapies ?

Yes it can. This is a flexible therapy that can be integrated into many complementary therapy approaches. If a person chooses, I can include acupressure with the following therapies:

·      Hypnotherapy / Hypnosis

·      Past Life Regression

·      Facial Foot and hand Reflexology

·      Reiki

I hope you found this Introductory Booklet helpful.
